I think the mag. shows a great diversity of opinion. And although I do not agree with all the opinions that are stated within it I do very much agree with the idea of the mag. in general. That is, providing a place where people can state their opinion, expressing freedom of speech, etc. There are not enough places at McMaster where dissenting opinions can have a voice and I am grateful to Perspectives for providing such an outlet. Many people might feel powerless but mag.'s such as these sure can bring a lot of peoples' ideas together, which I think is empowering.
I want to congratulate all the thinking sheep for this fine magazine. I have some idea of the time, effort, imagination, and skill necessary for such a result.
I realize that my own contribution to it may look peculiar in the context of the whole. But I am particularly interested in the positions of women and their images in this culture, and in unusual solutions (such as I mention in my article) to a complex, multi-layered problem.
I left the university in 2005 partly because of powerlessness to change what had to be changed. There were and are faculty members in my area who claim to be powerless but are playing victim, refusing to take responsibilty for their own issues, blaming others for their failures, behaving inappropriately and unprofessionally, and (no surprise) destroying much around them. I mention this to show that powerlessness is not always what it is claimed.
I remain at the university as an informal assistant to a program, and so am interested in the nature of dissatisfaction and dissent, and whether/how it may have a beneficial effect at the university.
Now that the Perspectives Magazine is out, this is the place that the discussion continues - share what you feel powerless about, comment on someone else's response, debate powerlessness and apathy, see the unpublished responses, and pretty much say anything you like. Add your articles, comments, quotes, videos, drawings, songs - anything goes. Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing.
Let us know what you thought of the magazine - we're incredibly curious.
Thanks!
